Get lost

Ask a Toddler - Get Lost

Seriously. Get lost. Its refreshing. After you get over the panic of actually realising you have no idea where you are, and after ensuring that you are either relatively safe or can secure your safety if you have to, the thrill of getting lost is fantastic!

When we get lost, all our primal instincts kick into gear. Our five senses become alert, sharpen and focus. Our sense of direction tries to convince us there is a navigational ‘right’ direction, our adrenalin is raised to ensure our bodies deal with uncertainty and shock most efficiently, our brains go into overdrive trying to think of a way out of the situation and we perspire to ensure we don’t overheat from doing all of the above. Wow! What an exhilaration!

We often avoid getting lost at all costs and we have our smart phones with friendly voices providing navigational directions, our GPS units tell us in no uncertain terms this is the best route, even a street directory as a fallback is not uncommon, even today! Our reliance on these mechanisms have robbed us of our own inbuilt ability to get out of tricky situations. The longer we rely on these devices which are artificial means of substituting innate human skill, the more likely we are to loose our ability to be humans, to utilise our ability to survive no matter what.

Get lost! There is nothing like it. It’ll make you feel human again.
