The best gifts and those worth giving are opportunity and experience. Not umbrellas or BBQs or cuff links.
I’ve posted previously about special days and how important it is to commemorate and celebrate but to never forget that everyday is special, like every other day. Often we exchange or give gifts on these so called ‘special days’ and sometimes simply for the sake of giving. Don’t get me wrong, a thoughtful gift can make someone happy and can be a genuine token of your love and appreciation.
However, anything tangible that you buy from a shop is not a gift that will last a lifetime and really show your love and appreciation towards someone you truly care about. The only gifts that can tick all the boxes are opportunities and experiences. Giving someone an opportunity to do something they would never have otherwise had or creating an experience together with someone you care about will last a lifetime. Giving your time to share in those opportunities and experiences is what makes these gifts even more special.
Time is the most valuable thing you can give. It’s not only your time you can give to someone but you can also help those you love have the time of their lives; a much more valuable gift that’s worth more than anything you can buy from a shop.
So instead of getting a new shirt or a set of fancy cuff links and a pair of undies for fathers day, give a little of your time, create an experience, allow an opportunity to arise, get him a voucher towards an adventurous pursuit; memories that will last a life time. Give the gift of experience.
